What makes content go viral?
It’s a tough question, but when you look around, there are some people who create content that goes viral.
What is their secret? They know some ways and you don’t?
The answer is yes! They made it work well!
They know how to push tiny “traffic” button triggers across the network without problems.
How do I know this? Because I’ve been doing it for years. And until recently, I was never able to explain exactly how I could do it.
But today, that all changes.
What makes online content go viral?
Marketing expert at the Wharton School of Business who specializes in discovering what makes ideas and products go viral. His name is Jonah Berger (follow him on Twitter here).
Jonah Berger’s featured articles are featured in many reputable marketing research journals and publications such as the Wall Street Journal, New York Times, The Economist and many more.
So suffice it to say, when he speaks or writes, I listen.
Most recently, Jonah Berger co-authored a research paper with Katy Milkman called “What Makes Online Content Go Viral”?, and in it, there are insights you just can’t afford to miss.
Here are the highlights:
- Positive content goes viral more easily than negative content.
(Awesome, isn’t it? When you read the news, you’ll think negativity is a must, heh).
- Content that evokes highly arousing emotions. Positive or negative, it’s more viral than content without emotion.
(What is a highly arousing emotion? Think of the things that excite the reader: awe, anger, anxiety, or anything related to the fear of loss.)
- Practically useful content is shared.
(That makes sense, doesn’t it? People love to share practically useful content to help interested people and their friends)
How to create viral content?
Now that you have the notes on the cliff, the question is, how can you create viral content (Content spreads like a virus)? How can you apply the insights directly to your writing?

Positive uplifting content is always shared. Remember, there are so many unhappy people in the world, they have different reasons for their unhappiness, uplifting and inspirational content helps people get out of their rage even if it’s just for a little while. a few seconds.
However, in my opinion, if you’re looking to generate traffic for business purposes, you’re better off focusing on practical content that triggers high emotional arousal. It gave me the best results for the past 5 years, and still gives me great results today.

How to prepare useful practical content
When you write an article and complete the editing process, you are not done. There is one final step that you have to take, and the funny thing is, almost no one does it.
What is that step?
You have to go through your content, figure out the next actions you want people to take, and complete your post with a section that tells people the next action steps.
It seems simple, but it has power.
Psychologists have long known that people are terrible at applying broad concepts to their own lives. That’s why people know the 80/20 rule, but rarely implement it in their lives and businesses.
And that’s why this simple action sequel is so good. You show your readers exactly how to use the content you bring to them. And what will happen? They use it, get results, and remember you for it.

If your content triggers high emotional arousal, you’re set. The likelihood of people sharing and talking about your content increases dramatically, as both Jonah Berger found in his research and I found through personal experience.
What is a high emotional arousal?
For starters, a high emotional arousal can be positive or negative (both types work). I briefly mentioned a few earlier in this article, but here is a more complete list: astonishment, anger, anxiety, fear, joy, lust, and of course, surprise.
But this is where things get a little more complicated. While it’s simple to trigger these emotions, it’s far from simple. You had to think about the emotion you wanted to target and achieve it perfectly.
Since most people learn by example, let me walk you through an example:
Example: Content is the King of “Myth” that is just the past
In that paper, I challenged the widely accepted assumption that “Content is king“.
I cited research that supported my claim, and the paper was done. Thousands of hits and hundreds of Facebook retweets and likes afterward, I had a piece of viral content on my hands.
Why did it take off?
I had data with surprising results. There were some people who were SHOCKED at what I discovered, and therefore had to share it with their friends and colleagues.
The article also did another thing though digging
That article also angered a group of people who defamed the entire concept of Content is king.
I succeeded in provoke anger and angry people tried to poke fun at my claims. They wrote follow-up articles (graded me the links), left hundreds of comments (that post had over 140 comments), and shared it with everyone they knew.
Now how can you trigger high emotional arousal?
Once you know what triggers a particular emotion, it’s easy to do so.

What’s scary? It is quite simply something remarkable. Something that people can’t resist commenting on. This can take the form of stories, real-life events, or it can be as simple as an exhaustive list of 101 links to helpful resources.
When you anger people, they will work hard to achieve justice. They will talk about it on Twitter, write blog posts, and more.
How can you trigger anger? All you have to do is challenge someone’s beliefs and that’s for sure.

(Note, I don’t recommend pissing people off all the time. That’s a bad marketing strategy.)
People hate worrying. What creates anxiety? If you’re writing content that talks about the possibility of losing something, that’s one way. People hate losing what they have.

Fear is one of the greatest motivators on Earth. It targets the brains of reptiles and people irresistible urge to act when motivated by fear.
What is an example of fear? You can make people worry that they are making a mistake without their knowledge. You can also target a fear of loss (also known as a limited amount).

What makes people happy? There are countless things. It could be something funny, inspirational, or anything positively uplifting.
One of my favorite ways to target feelings of joy is by telling a story from my life that I know people can connect with. It really capitalizes on the nostalgia and bond with the people who read it.
6. Lust (sex)
People can desire more than just sex. They may desire money, results, women, men, or anything like that. To target that, you just need to excite your readers with potential results.
Although I don’t have a lust-action example at SeoTheTop, I’m sure you’ll get the idea :-).
What surprises people? Anything that goes against their expectations. You can challenge assumptions, and prove them wrong. You can share new ways of doing things, or share the results of individual tests.
